Health Education

Health Education

The Alameda Boys & Girls Club provides health and wellness activities that will lead our youth to develop long lasting healthy habits.

Using the Botvin Lifeskills Training Curriculum, the Club’s health education program offers sessions for youth in grades 3 & 4, 5 & 6, and high school. The Botvin curriculum is a comprehensive, dynamic, and developmentally appropriate substance abuse and violence prevention program that has been proven to help increase self-esteem, develop healthy attitudes, and improve youth’s knowledge of essential life skills – all of which promote healthy and positive personal development and mental health.

Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) focuses on helping young people understand and manage their feelings, build positive relationships, and make good decisions. In our health education program, the SEL curriculum focuses on teaching our youth skills like understanding emotions, setting goals, solving problems, and handling stress in healthy ways.

Before I started coming here, I didn’t always know how to handle my feelings. Sometimes I’d get stressed about school or friendships and I didn’t know what to do. But at the Club, I’ve learned so much about my emotions and how to work through them. In our Health Education classes, we do activities like “Wellness Wednesdays” where we practice mindfulness, yoga and breathing exercises. My favorite is bubble breathing—it helps me calm down and take a moment when I’m upset. I even made a mindfulness jar in class that I use when I need to relax. One of the most important things I’ve learned is how to talk about my feelings. Before, I might have kept something inside, but now I know it’s okay to tell an adult or a friend when I’m sad or angry. The staff here are always there to listen. We also talk about bullying and how to stand up for ourselves and others. I’ve seen how much it helps when kids feel safe and supported. - Lauren, 11

Mind Matters

Mind Matters teaches kids and teens to heal from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and other negative experiences with innovative methods. These skills give youth a way to take charge of their emotions and improve their states of mind while addressing their physical, relational, and mental health needs.
