Creative math:

Corporate generosity + 1 kid with a heart = school supplies for 100 kids

It all started when Old Navy invited a small group of our 8th and 9th grade members into their Alameda store to shadow their employees for a day. Retail is a classic entry-level job for kids, and this kind of on-the-job exposure helps them get a feel for what it's like. At the end of the day, an Old Navy employee gave each of the kids a backpack filled with school supplies.

But the story doesn't end there. One of the kids couldn't stop thinking of his friends back home. "Wouldn't it be great if we could do this for all the kids in the housing project?" he asked. Old Navy didn't hesitate. They collected from other stores and employees, and provided the Alameda club with 100 backpacks, fully loaded with pens, pencils, paper, rulers, etc. Thanks to the great suggestion by our member, and the generosity of Old Navy, 100 kids went back to school this fall fully equipped.

Please note: The Alameda Boys & Girls Club is currently operating at a temporary location and is serving teens from ages 12 to 18 only at this time. When the new Clubhouse is completed in 2010, we will be pleased to again welcome boys and girls starting at age 6.
