This past Saturday, June 19th, Club Members and staff woke up extra early to participate in the City’s Annual Sand Castle & Sand Sculpture Contest at Crown Memorial Beach. This year’s design selection was a large sculpture of SpongeBob SquarePants and his best friend Patrick.  With our members working together diligently with shovels, garden tools, and buckets, we completed our sculpture before the end of the allotted time.

While on the journey back to the Teen Center, all the kids decided it would be fun to participate in next year’s event.  We capped off the contest with a pizza party for all the members who participated.

The Steel Is Up!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

It’s hard to believe how fast the construction of our new Youth Development Center is proceeding. Just a few short weeks ago I was walking through dirt and weeds to get an idea of what the building was going to look like. Now, with the foundation in and the steel beams in place, I can actually walk from room to room and see (at least in my mind) kids enjoying the games room while playing pool, foosball and ping pong or shooting hoops and playing volleyball in the gym. I can almost smell something cooking in our kitchen and watch children complete their school assignments in our computer lab. After looking at this clubhouse on a 81/2 by 11 inch piece of paper with a floor plan, seeing all 25,000 square feet is impressive and gratifying. Still lots to do and money to raise but it is real now and will continue to grow.
